Hearn Elementary School was the winning group from this year’s Franklin County Aluminum Recycling Drive, open to all schools in Franklin County and Frankfort Independent, hosted by Franklin County Solid Waste.

In total, 23,350 cans were collected by county staff from participating schools throughout the month of February, creating a total of $561.09 earned from Radius Recycling. Meridith Mitchell’s 5th grade STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) group collected and counted a total of 7,731 cans!

Hearn Elementary’s 5th grade STEAM group plans to use the prize money to purchase a learning tool for their class, as the whole school participates in the STEAM program.

Are students at your school interested in learning about the aluminum recycling process? Schedule an environmental education lesson with our AmeriCorps member, Christine: christine.argus@franklincounty.ky.gov .

Special thanks to the Kentucky Division of Waste Management for providing the aluminum can pop-up bins through a recycling grant, and all participating schools for their efforts:
