Kentucky State University held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new south campus dormitory facility this morning. Remarks were made by newly hired President Dr. Koffi Akakpo, Representative Derrick Graham, Dr. Aaron Thompson, Deputy Judge Jack Kennedy, and Mayor Layne Wilkerson among others. An invocation was delivered by Rev. Dr. C.B. Akins.
This new, state-of-the-art facility is 164,268 SQ FT, 5 stories tall, and features 408 beds. There are several different dorm floor plans: one with two bedrooms and another with four bedrooms. In both of these “dorm pods,” students share a common area with a kitchenette while two students share a private bathroom. A third-floor plan features a single occupancy unit for Resident Directors.
The university’s goal is to create a living-learning environment. Therefore, the building also contains an expansive lobby, study lounges, offices/workrooms, recreational space, and a multipurpose classroom. Eventually, the facility will also be the site of a new 12,000 SQ FT dining facility that can accommodate 350 students. However, that portion of the building remains to be completed. The project cost for this new building is approximately 50 million dollars.
