Bridge remains closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 4, 2024) – Bridge inspectors will continue assessments today on the U.S. 60X “Singing Bridge” that spans the Kentucky River in downtown Frankfort.
Engineering consultants from Michael Baker International will conduct additional hands-on inspections and gather in-depth analysis of the bridge’s structural condition to investigate options for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). Ensuring the safety of the public and the structure remains a priority, and the bridge’s closure remains indefinite.
As a precaution to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, KYTC closed the 130-year-old bridge on Aug. 30 after a routine inspection identified significant structural deterioration that affected its weight-carrying capacity. Prior to the closure, the bridge had been operating under a 4-ton weight limit established following a 2022 inspection. The 2024 inspection identified further deterioration in additional steel supports and connections. The bridge undergoes an annual inspection to monitor its condition.
Drivers and pedestrians who normally use the bridge, which serves approximately 3,400 vehicles daily, should continue to follow the detour via the U.S. 60 (Capital Avenue) bridge.
