New traffic configuration and newly aligned I-64 west on-ramp to be in place following intermittent lane closures on Saturday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 6, 2024) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of upcoming lane closures and traffic pattern changes as part of the ongoing improvement project at the Interstate 64 and U.S. 127 interchange in Franklin County.

Beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, traffic on U.S. 127 from mile point 4.4 (at the bridge over I-64) to mile point 5.1 (near the U.S. 127/Kings Daughters Drive intersection) will be reduced to one lane in each direction to allow contract crews to perform water blasting and striping operations. Additionally, the Leonardwood Drive/West Ridge intersection will be converted to a temporary all-way stop to facilitate traffic signal head adjustments.

Upon completion of these activities, traffic will transition into its final configuration:

• U.S. 127 southbound will feature two through travel lanes.
• U.S. 127 northbound will include three through travel lanes – the third lane will originate from the I-64 westbound off-ramp, allowing optimized traffic flow as drivers remain in their designated lane.

Additionally, traffic will begin utilizing the newly aligned I-64 West on-ramp from U.S.127 North. In October of this year, the newly aligned I-64 West off-ramp (Exit 53B) opened to motorists.
The remaining work involves installing high-mast lighting and traffic signals, performing grading operations, completing median improvements, enhancing sidewalks, and resurfacing U.S. 127.
This $4 million project, awarded to ATS Construction of Lexington, KY, will enhance travel efficiency and safety near the Paddocks of Frankfort and the surrounding areas. The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2025.

Motorists should heed signage and use caution while traveling through the work zone.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
