A Comprehensive Comparison

Composting is a great way to reduce food waste and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden. But with so many different composting methods available, it can be hard to decide which one is right for you.

Two options are given with Franklin County’s Backyard Composting Class: a compost bin or a compost tumbler. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the pros and cons of each type of composter to help you make the best decision for your needs.

Compost Bins

The compost bin we provide is made of black plastic and includes a metal stirrer. Compost bins are ideal for residents with backyard space who produce more food waste. This container touches the ground directly.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Can hold more food scraps

Cons:

  • Need access to a yard
  • Can attract pests if not properly maintained

Compost Tumblers

Compost tumblers can be more efficient. They are designed to rotate, which helps to break down food scraps and other organic materials more quickly. Compost tumblers may work better for a smaller outdoor space, or residents who produce less food waste.

Pros:

  • More efficient
  • Less likely to attract pests

Cons:

  • Produces less compost
  • Need to turn more often

Composting is a learning experience with lots of trial and error. I look forward to seeing everyone at the library class on March 6th! Link to register here: https://forms.gle/ikthxpeGuQEgJrFr9
