Frankfort, KY – September 30, 2025 – A bold new chapter for health, recreation, and community life in Franklin County is currently underway. The Franklin County Fiscal Court, the City of Frankfort, and the Franklin County Board of Education have entered an historic interlocal agreement to begin the design phase for a state-of-the-art indoor aquatic center and wellness facility.

This collaboration represents a shared vision: to provide world-class opportunities for fitness, recreation, competition, and wellness for residents of all ages. The proposed facility will serve as a hub for swimming, exercise, and community connection, enhancing quality of life while strengthening the region’s appeal as a destination for families, businesses, and visitors alike.

“Today’s announcement is a shining example of what we can achieve when we work together,” said Franklin County Judge/Executive Michael Mueller.  “This partnership shows our commitment to building a healthier, stronger community, and this facility will be a place where everyone can thrive.”

The aquatic and wellness center will not only provide recreational and training opportunities for students and families, but it will also create exciting new possibilities for hosting regional events and competitions—bringing new energy and economic benefits to Frankfort and Franklin County.

By uniting behind this project, the Fiscal Court, City, and School Board are demonstrating their dedication to investing in both the present and future of the community. Entering the design phase is a critical first step, allowing partners to ensure the project is visionary, accessible, and sustainable.

“This is about more than bricks and mortar,” said Judge Mueller. “It’s about creating a facility that reflects the values of our community—wellness, opportunity, and togetherness.”

As the design phase moves forward, community members will be kept informed and engaged in the process. The shared goal is simple but powerful: to deliver a first-class aquatic and wellness center that will serve generations to come.
